The prostate gland is a small gland surrounding the urethra, about the size of a walnut (under normal conditions). The prostate has two main functions—to help control the flow of urine, and to provide the alkaline medium that helps make up seminal fluid (the prostate produces approximately 30% of total seminal fluid). Both of these functions are important for a man's health. It is therefore very important for a man to know the functions of the prostate, and how to keep it healthy. If the prostate does not protect itself from hormonal imbalances and other damage, it may become unable to function properly.
As noted above, the prostate gland plays an important role in the male reproductive system. The seminal fluid produced in the prostate performs several crucial functions in relation to sperm. It serves as the transport fluid for the sperm during ejaculation, allowing the sperm to travel to and move within the vaginal canal in the female reproductive system. In addition, as the pH of the seminal fluid is slightly alkaline, it helps protect the sperm from the acidic pH conditions that exist in the vagina, which conditions exist to destroy germs and other potentially-harmful foreign agents. Without this alkaline seminal fluid, sperm would be damaged or destroyed before ever reaching and fertilizing the female's egg.
In addition to producing seminal fluid, the prostate also closes the urethra's neck to the bladder during ejaculation, just above the prostate gland, in order to keep semen and urine separate.
The prostate surrounds an approximately one-inch section of the urethra—the tract through which urine flows for excretion from the body. When normal prostate conditions exist, urine flow progresses from the bladder through the urethra unimpeded. When the prostate is enlarged, urine flow can be slowed or, with very serious prostate enlargement, stopped altogether.
Certain specific nutrients have been identified as being important to prostate health. These include zinc, selenium, a variety of specific amino acids, phytosterols, and lycopene, and the red pigment found in tomatoes and watermelon.
No man should take lightly the health of his prostate gland. Be sure to check with your health care practitioner for counsel and advice regarding lifestyle and other factors that can contribute to a healthy prostate.
I was 28 years old when I had my first prostate infection. At that time my doctor prescribed antibiotics and sexual activity to get the blood flowing to the prostate, which would carry the antibiotic into the gland to kill the infection. This combination proved to alleviate my symptoms, and life went on. A couple years or so later, however, I began to have problems again. This time new symptoms presented—some quite startling—and I got pretty worried. I went to several doctors. Over time, none of them could explain excatly why or how to stop the problems I was having, but all seemed to acknowledge that I was suffering from prostatitis and Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). I had Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) tests done, and nothing showed up—blood tests showed no prostate cancer. I was miserable and had to that point had no positive results from any medical treatment. In fact, the more prescribed drugs I took, the worse the problem became, although looking back, some dietary habits were likely contributing to this lack of results. Granted, not all men will have this same experience with medical/drug treatments, but this was mine. At this point, then, I decided to get more proactive about searching out solutions on my own.
After doing a great deal of research and talking to a host of different people in different industries and disciplines, I opted to try an herbal approach. The arguments in favor of helping the body through better nutrition and lifestyle were persuasive enough that I simply could no longer ignore them. I first did a complete herbal detoxification, and then made significant modifications to my diet.
During the years prior to this new approach, as I mentioned previously, I had developed some poor dietary habits that I am positive furthered the progression of my problem. As part of my job at the time I would entertain company guests, and dinners were a frequent method of treating our clients. One particular client got me hooked on Scotch and steak, and I would have this combination with regularity during that time. It also happens that this was the time when I experienced the greatest decline in my prostate health.
To be short, the changes I implemented had a wonderful effect on my health in many areas, not just with my prostate. I began eating better, cutting out alcohol and substantially reducing meat intake, while increasing my intake of fruits and vegetables. In addition, I began taking supplements that my research had led me to believe would positively affect my fight against prostate problems. While Federal regulations prohibit me from making certain claims in regards to supplements on this website, I can say with 100% certainty that it was this combination of changes which brought about the improvement in my health. And my persistence in these lifestyle changes has maintained that health to this day. And to be clear, I do not believe that isolating the supplements as "the" determining factor in my health would be the truth, any more than isolating the dietary and other changes would be. They each play their part, and I don't plan on eliminating any of them.
My own personal experience, and the increasing number of men who die every year from prostate problems, have instilled in me a “passion” for prostate health. And that passion is the impetus behind Prostate Passion™, which is formulated with the various herbs, vitamins, and minerals which I have taken since my early 30s to regain and keep a healthy prostate. I would also mention that many of our male customers take reVigorate, some of them buying it a case at a time, to help in the prostate-health battle. While it is marketed as a sterols/sterolin product (sterols alone are a powerful agent in prostate health), it is also loaded with superoxide dismutase—a fantastic antioxidant. We are not at all surprised that men find reVigorate to have a positive effect on their prostate health.
You men… I, and all the widows whose husbands lose the battle with prostate cancer, urge you to care for your prostate. Don’t take our word for anything. Do your own research—educate yourselves. Make needed adjustments in your lifestyle and diet. Work with your medical provider. Find the solution that will secure your own prostate health. And enjoy life!
