Do digestive enzymes supplements really work?

Following is a sure-fire test that you can easily administer to determine whether or not your digestive enzymes supplement does that which you pay for—help your body digest foods more efficiently.

What digestive enzymes are supposed to do

First, a quick reminder about why we need digestive enzymes in the first place.  The bottom line for digestion is that foods that we ingest must be liquified—broken down on a molecular level—in order for the body to absorb the nutrients in them.  This process begins in the mouth, where chewing and saliva-introduced enzymes combine to start the liquification of the food.  If you don't take time to chew well, you are putting a great strain on the rest of the digestive system, and it is likely that much of the nutrient-continaing food you eat will pass through your system as waste, having never fully been broken down and absorbed.

Once we chew and swallow, it becomes the job of digestive enzymes and juices in the stomach and intestines to finish the liquification of the food we eat.  This is where digestive enzymes supplements come in.  Digestive enzymes supplements introduce more digestive enzymes into your system than your body itself makes, and are therefore very beneficial for those who regularly have too few digestive enzymes to properly break down the foods they eat.  So, if a digestive enzymes supplement is taken to boost digestion, it should be able to liquify food to some degree outside the body.  And that is what we are here to do—test whether or not your digestive enzymes supplement does what it is supposed to do.  And we'll use a bowl of oatmeal to test it.

The digestive enzymes supplement test

Here's what you'll need to perform the test:

  • 1/2 cup (lightly heaped) dry quick oats
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 small bowl
  • 2 small spoons
  • 1 thermometer (this is technically optional, but it's best if you have one)
  • 1 saucepan
  • 1 digestive enzymes capsule or pill (pulverized)

Follow these steps to perform the test:

  1. Heat the water to a boil in the saucepan
  2. Add the oatmeal and stir, reducing heat to simmer
  3. Let cook for a minute or so, until most of the water is either absorbed into the oats or has boiled away
  4. Remove saucepan from heat and let sit for a minute or so
  5. Evenly divide the oatmeal into the two small bowls
  6. After a minute or so, stir the oatmeal in both bowls (to help it cool) and then insert the thermometer, repeating this process until the oatmeal has cooled to about 100 degrees F (roughly body temperature)
  7. Once the oats have cooled to 100 degrees (the oatmeal should be kind of clumpy at this point, with not much water visible on the bottom of the bowl, if any), break open the digestive enzymes capsule and pour the entire contents into one of the bowls of oats, then stir it well, to get the enzymes to mix as evenly as possible with the oats (if you use a compact pill, first pulverize the pill, and then sprinkle it on the oats, following the steps the same way as with a capsule)
  8. With the other spoon, stir the other bowl of oats (using two spoons ensures that no enzymes get into the "control" bowl)
  9. Stir each bowl again at five minutes, and again at ten minutes, using the spoons that correspond to each bowl
  10. Note the results

Analyzing the results of the digestive enzymes supplement test

If your digestive enzymes supplement works as it should, the oats with which the enzymes were mixed should after a full ten minutes be fairly liquified.  The other bowl of oats will look no different than it did when you first poured it—just plain, clumpy oatmeal.  If your digestive enzymes are of the highest quality, you should actually begin to see the liquification of the oatmeal begin within 10 seconds of your adding and stirring in the enzymes.  And the more time passes, the more obvious it should become that the enzymes are breaking down the oatmeal.  After an hour, no whole oats should be visible—only a viscous, soupy liquid and oat fragments should remain.  If this is the result, you can bet that your digestive enzymes supplement is likewise working for you in your digestive system.
